Everyone keeps telling me that reaching six week is a milestone with a new baby. And we’ve made it. To celebrate, I have a fun giveaway for you at the end of today’s post.

The most exciting thing to come with six weeks has been regular BIG smiles and tons of interaction from Finn.

Throughout the day we have playtime where I get right at his level and talk to him and also make faces and sounds. He goes crazy kicking his legs and waving his arms and some of the faces this babe gives me crack me up. He’s just starting to make some cooing noises and I’m looking forward to more of those.

Everyone told me that the smiles are game changers and they really are. It’s been amazing to feel like he really sees me, knows me and likes me! 🙂

Here’s a quick run through six weeks postpartum and then we’ll get to that giveaway!

Fourth Trimester: Six Weeks Postpartum

Six Weeks Postpartum

Body changes: same, same but every week I feel more and more like myself in my body.

Breastfeeding: continues to go well. He’s still spitting up a lot but I did try to weigh him last week and it seems like he’s over 10 pounds now so I think we’re good in the weight gain department. He’s also working on getting that buddha belly and he has some legit rolls on his thighs!

I’m most paranoid about my supply. He’s sleeping longer stretches at night and spacing out some of his feedings during the day. I’m mostly worried about the nighttime stretches because during the day I feel like he ends up “making up for it” by sometimes going three hours and then wanting to feed every hour (especially in the evenings).

I don’t really have a reason to worry but supply seems like something you hear so much about. The pediatrician told me to let him sleep during the night and not to wake him to feed…and I feel like I need the sleep too…but sometimes I wake up and I’m really uncomfortable so I end up waking him up to eat!

I’m probably overthinking this.

Sleep: this leads right into sleep. We’re still grooving with a 4-6 hour stretch to start the night and then another 3-4 hour stretch until he wakes up.

Symptoms: I’m going to forego my usual list because everything is either the same or has gone away. I’m also planning to write my c-section physical recovery post this week so I’ll go more in depth there.

The primary “symptom” I’m having these days is thirst. I constantly feel like I need to be drinking something and if I don’t have water within arm’s reach, it feels urgent that I get some.

Emotional well-being: I feel okay day-to-day and I love taking care of Finn but I have some general low-level anxiety that is always sitting with me and it seems to be the worst when I’m breastfeeding. That is weird to me because I enjoy breastfeeding but maybe it’s because I get still and really connect with Finn in those moments.

Being in Florida was a great distraction and I felt really good while I was there. I arrived home late last night and today has been hard. My house feels really empty (although I have my two sweet girls to keep me company) and I feel a little bored and lonely. Even though I did an equal amount of nothing and sitting around when I was in Florida, having the energy of my grandmother and parents around was a huge comfort.

Hopefully I can settle into a routine and find some sort of normal. It’s going to be interesting figuring out what that’s going to look like given that I’m not returning to work outside of the home anytime soon and there are other circumstances that I will address when I am able to.

Workouts/activity: I feel 100% good with no pain or discomfort when walking (both slowly and more vigorously) and I did two yoga practices last week that felt really great…and were very needed. I couldn’t even straighten my legs in down dog during that first practice! I’m looking forward to slowly increasing my activity level in coming weeks and months. I won’t launch back into long runs, high intensity workouts or heavy strength but I’m looking forward to more moving and sweating.
