On The Move

Good morning. I hope you all had a nice weekend. My mom left yesterday after spending the last two weeks in Charlotte with us. Prior to that we spent a week in Florida so we’ve been together for three weeks. It’s definitely an adjustment to get used to her not being here.

There was a reason for her extended visit…I am buying a house and we are moving!!! Things have been pretty crazy behind the scenes for the last few weeks but I wanted to wait until I was sure that the house was going to go through before I shared anything publicly. The market is wild in Charlotte and it’s been an interesting and intense process.

I have been casually looking for houses for the last six months and unexpectedly went under contract on a house while I was in Florida. My mom was already planning to drive back with us to help with the drive and spend time in Charlotte but she extended her trip to help me with inspections, purging, packing, etc.

I am beyond grateful for the time she spent with us. It was wonderful to have her support on all things home buying and to have help with Finn, especially given how short our due diligence period was and how quickly closing is approaching. She promises to come back soon to help us get settled in the new house. 🙂

I have been renting my current home for almost 3.5 years and Finn joined the party during the time I was here so I have a LOT to sort through and pack up. It’s daunting and awesome all at the same time. I’m taking this opportunity to really wipe the slate clean and start fresh.

I’ll share more house stuff in future posts. Let me know if you have any specific questions!

Another huge development is that Finn started climbing out of his crib so I transitioned his crib to a toddler bed over the weekend. You guys, I was hoping that we could get through this move before any sleep situation changes happened but my little monkey had other plans. (Related, I ask him all the time if he’s a monkey or a snuggle bug and 90% of the time he answers “snuggle bug.”) Once Finn climbed out once it was game over. He knew he could do it and I was so worried about him falling and hurting himself.

We’ve done two nights and one nap in the toddler bed and it’s gone better than expected. Luckily, he can’t turn the doorknobs yet (only a matter of time) so while he does get out of his bed, he doesn’t leave his room. I am undecided about whether I will turn the doorknobs around in the new house. My initial thought was that it was cruel to essentially lock him in his room but I’ve read some things about safety that make a lot of sense to me. I’m also unsure of what to do about baby gates both at his doorway and at the top of the stairs as I’m worried he’ll also try to climb over those.

The first few times that Finn climbed out of his crib and got out of his toddler bed, I’d go in his room to find all the lights on and him reading a book or sitting in his chair. I’ve since removed all access to lights and lots of other things. I’m also figuring out what to do with the outlet where the white noise machine and monitor are plugged in. I am either going to get some sort of outlet/cord cover or move furniture in front of it (and anchor it) in the new house.

Navigating toddlers sure does keep your problem solving skills sharp! 🙂

And with that, Finn and I are off to tackle a day of packing. I need to sort through the attic and outdoor shed at some point and it’s supposed to be 94 degrees today. Send lots of cooling thoughts our way.

QUESTIONS

Give me all of your best moving tips! And tips for getting kids settled in a new place.

When is the last time you moved? Do you like or loathe moving?

How did the crib to bed transition go for you? Did you move to a floor bed, toddler bed or regular bed? I can’t decide what I want to do! I’m equally torn between keeping him in this toddler bed, getting a Montessori-style floor bed or getting a regular “big” full/queen bed.
