Fighting It Off

I woke up in the middle of the night with a raging sore throat. Ugh. Unfortunately, I’m not surprised. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read that it’s very common to get sick after endurance events. MarathonGuide.com says, “After the marathon, your immune status will be depressed. Because of the physiological hit to the immune system created by the stress of running a marathon, colds, flu, and other upper respiratory tract infections are potential problems in the days and weeks that follow.” The marathon coupled with an extremely stressful week created the perfect scenario for me to catch a bug.

I’m ready to fight.

I stopped by Earth Fare after yoga this evening to pick up cold-fighting ammunition. I also packed as many nutrients into my dinner as possible.

Roasted kabocha squash, brussels sprouts and tempeh with barbecue sauce. Whole wheat toast on the side.

About my decision to go to yoga…I was really on the fence given my sore throat and general yucky feeling but I had been looking forward to Suzanne’s class at Charlotte Yoga all weekend. Suzanne was the first yoga teacher in Charlotte whose classes I fell in love with. I used to go to her hot class religiously every Sunday until I was finally attending so many yoga classes over the course of the week that I had to pick a studio to go unlimited. I chose Y2 for a variety of reasons but I miss Suzanne’s class. I have been needing a Suzanne practice all week so I went through with my plans and practiced today. I assure you that I kept it low-key.

We’ll go a little out of order here. We had an awesome sushi spread at Cyros last night. It is by far our favorite spot for sushi in Charlotte.

Then I came home and crashed for almost 10 hours (thank you “fall back!”) but still woke up sick. Sigh…

Brandon requested pancakes this morning and I was happy to oblige.

I used my new favorite pancake recipe and served Brandon’s plain and stirred a little pumpkin into the batter before cooking my pancakes.

I’m off to figure out what I’m teaching for BodyPump tomorrow morning (please, please, please let me feel better), load up on vitamins and rest.

How do you guys beat colds? Anything I must try? I cannot be sick this week. So much going on at work!

Breakfast + What I Bought at Trader Joe’s

Breakfast + What I Bought at Trader Joe’s

I am such a creature of habit when it comes to breakfast. 95% of the time I’m craving a breakfast that is on the sweet side. That mostly alternates between smoothies or yogurt bowls with overnight oats, chia pudding or oatmeal occasionally thrown in there. On the rare occasion I go savory – it’s scrambled [...]

Life Lately: Summer So Far

Life Lately: Summer So Far

I want to bottle up this summer and make it last forever (well, maybe minus the wildly hot and humid weather that makes running a big thumbs down). I mentioned this in my last post…but I am really enjoying the slower pace and the days that feel like they have more space. While I’m trying [...]

So Many Dinner Ideas

So Many Dinner Ideas

Happy Friday! I hope this post finds you well and enjoying the summer. We are in the dog days of it over here in Charlotte – the heat and humidity is off the charts – but it’s something I’ll embrace because I deeply appreciate the massive slow down that summer has brought. A lot of [...]

Life Lately: 8 Years Old, A New Piercing, Trail Training and More

Happy Memorial Day Weekend. It’s a very rainy one here in Charlotte and while I am a little bummed not to be spending the weekend in Florida with the fam or by the pool at our swim club (just opened for the season!), I’m also welcoming a slower pace and time at home. It’s been [...]
