Fun and Un-Fun News

FUN NEWS

Fun news #1: I’m teaching my first yoga class tomorrow!!! My supervisor at the Y asked if I would like to sub a class and I decided to go for it. At the Y, you just have to be in the process of getting your 200-hour RYT (registered yoga teacher) to teach so here goes nothing. I’m teaching a pretty basic power flow and I feel comfortable with it. I’m going to try to relax and have fun. Full report to come on how it goes. I need to work on my playlist after I finish this post!

Fun news #2: We’re going to visit some of our very best friends from law school, Cristen and Graham, this weekend. They live in south Georgia so I’m taking a half day tomorrow so we can get on the road. I’m beyond excited about a weekend of hanging out and catching up. The weather is supposed to be beautiful with highs in the upper 70s and plenty of sunshine. I might plant myself outside on Saturday and not move!

This picture was taken in May when Cristen and Graham came to visit right after we’d moved into our house. Also, they have the cutest red-headed almost two year old! I can’t wait to see her!

UN-FUN NEWS
(edited to add – I know un-fun is not a word! :))

When I woke up this morning I could hardly straighten my left knee without pain in the back of my leg. I thought maybe I was just tight/sore from running so I decided to go to ashtanga anyway. I had the worst practice that I have had in a very long time. It hurt to straighten my leg in down dog and forward folds. Everything was really tight and not feeling good and I completely felt like I was not even in my own body. I ended my practice by spending time on the foam roller instead of in savasana.

I was really uncomfortable at work this morning and feeling a lot of pain in my back and leg. I finally couldn’t take it anymore and at 10:30 I called Dr. Matz’s office and was able to get in to see him over my lunch break. We talked about my fall, dealing with the pain I was feeling and next steps. Thankfully, Dr. Matz was able to help out so much with my pain and I felt tons better when I left. I understand what is going on with my body and how I need to heal it.

That said, I’ve decided to take the weekend off and give my body a break. I haven’t taken two consecutive days of rest since after the marathon last fall and I think that my body is telling me loud and clear that it’s necessary for recovery. The extent of my workouts for the next couple of days will be walks and time on the foam roller (and hopefully I’ll be able to shoot the video and get the pictures for the Foam Rolling 101 post done!).

I have to admit that I’m struggling to deal with all of the backlash from this fall. It’s very frustrating to be injured…especially when I was not in control of my body when it happened. Also, I hate to keep talking about it on the blog but I also want to be real with you guys. I wish I could just tough this out but I can’t. Hopefully after this weekend I’ll be back to normal.

Enough serious! How about some food.

I treated myself to one of my favorite lunches after my appointment.

Sorry for the low-quality picture but all I had to work with was my BlackBerry. I picked up a tofu chicken salad sandwich and a kombucha from Berrybrook Farm. I so want to try to recreate this at home. It is so good and I’ve been craving it all week.

I had to teach BodyPump after work. It was too late to find a sub but I made it through class. I didn’t participate in anything that hurt my back. Also note that when I teach yoga tomorrow I will not practice with them, just coach them through it.

Tonight was taco night!

We snacked on chips and salsa while we cooked.

Two chicken tacos with black bean refried beans.

Off to create my playlist and pack!

Breakfast + What I Bought at Trader Joe’s

Breakfast + What I Bought at Trader Joe’s

I am such a creature of habit when it comes to breakfast. 95% of the time I’m craving a breakfast that is on the sweet side. That mostly alternates between smoothies or yogurt bowls with overnight oats, chia pudding or oatmeal occasionally thrown in there. On the rare occasion I go savory – it’s scrambled [...]

Life Lately: Summer So Far

Life Lately: Summer So Far

I want to bottle up this summer and make it last forever (well, maybe minus the wildly hot and humid weather that makes running a big thumbs down). I mentioned this in my last post…but I am really enjoying the slower pace and the days that feel like they have more space. While I’m trying [...]

So Many Dinner Ideas

So Many Dinner Ideas

Happy Friday! I hope this post finds you well and enjoying the summer. We are in the dog days of it over here in Charlotte – the heat and humidity is off the charts – but it’s something I’ll embrace because I deeply appreciate the massive slow down that summer has brought. A lot of [...]

Life Lately: 8 Years Old, A New Piercing, Trail Training and More

Happy Memorial Day Weekend. It’s a very rainy one here in Charlotte and while I am a little bummed not to be spending the weekend in Florida with the fam or by the pool at our swim club (just opened for the season!), I’m also welcoming a slower pace and time at home. It’s been [...]
