A Glory-ous Weekend

Hi, hi. I hope that your weekend was a good one and Monday was kind to you. We are trying our best to adjust to the time change and early darkness. Finn put himself to bed on Sunday night – went upstairs on his own, put on his PJs, picked out his books and informed me he was “skipping shower.” I was cracking up. Luckily, we both slept until normal wake up time this morning.

My Monday was full but really good. I dropped Finn off at preschool and then taught back-to-back yoga classes at Charlotte Yoga. I always teach at 10:45a on Mondays but jumped in to sub the 9:30a slow flow as well. I did a super quick rinse and change at the studio and headed over to Metro Fitness Club for a training to renew my CPR certification. It’s one of those things I never look forward to but am always glad I did a refresher on. I was mind blown today to learn that the current guidelines have gone away from rescue breathing. The person who led our training was former-EMS/fire.

“Research has shown that doing chest compressions, without rescue breaths, can circulate that oxygen and be as effective in doing it as traditional compression/rescue breath CPR for the first few minutes. This is where the idea of eliminating rescue breaths got started.” (source, also read this).

I think it makes a whole lot of sense in a situation where EMS will arrive within a matter of moments. I can see where creating and maintaining blood pressure would be beneficial to improving someones chances of survival, especially given that rescue breaths contain a whole lot of CO2. I also think that it can be overwhelming to remember to switch back and forth between compressions and rescue breathing in an emergency situation and people aren’t always comfortable offering rescue breaths when the person receiving them isn’t a friend or family member.

I would be interested to hear thoughts from those of you in the medical field. I’ve been taking these CPR/first aid trainings for 20+ years now and the guidelines are ALWAYS changing! I would honestly recommend a CPR refresher to anyone – especially parents. <3

And now, I’d like to backtrack to the weekend. It was a very simple but good one.

FRIDAY

I’m happy to report that Finn ended up rebounding from his fever episode and was feeling good by the time I dropped him with his dad on Friday. I headed to the yoga studio to teach and then came home for a Zoom meeting and afternoon of research and brainstorming. Very excited to share what I’ve been working on with y’all in the next few weeks!

fall in North Carolina

I wrapped up work around 5p and got suited up in running gear. I ran three miles and then grabbed the pups and walked another three.

It was just what I needed.

from scratch Netflix

I got showered and into PJs and made a delicious beef teriyaki dinner that I’ll share in my next recent eats recap. I made my way to the couch to finish the Netflix series, From Scratch. Holy moly, I wept through the entirety of episode seven. When I say that my cheeks were never dry, I mean it. This series is based on a memoir and is full of gorgeously poignant storylines and scenes. I think a lot of people go into this thinking it’s going to be a mindless, lighthearted show but it goes so, so deep.

I am really glad I watched it. While episodes seven and eight wrecked me, they did so in a very cathartic way. The emotional release was needed and I finished the series feeling uplifted and not depressed. Related, highly recommend listening to Brene Brown’s podcast episodes with the sisters.

SATURDAY

Charlotte regional farmers market

Once I got up, moving and caffeinated, I headed out to the Charlotte Regional Farmers Market. The fall market has been nothing short of incredible. I came home with kale, bok choy, cabbage, baby ginger, carrots, watermelon radishes, red peppers, eggs, bone-in pork chops and three cheese variations from UAV – lemon basil goat cheese, cottage cheese and cream cheese. I have been shopping at this market for over 10 years and I feel such a sense of cozy wholesomeness when I am there. It’s lovely to know your farmers and to go home and truly enjoy their very fresh and very local food.

I went straight from the market to the gym. I stuck my refrigerated stuff in the fridge and got to lifting. It was so nice to really take my time and be in no rush. I lifted for a little over an hour and then filmed some workouts for Instagram.

Back at home, I made a salad with some of my farmers market ingredients and then worked on my back patio. It was so warm and pleasant out.

I spent the rest of my afternoon/early evening watching the Georgia/Tennessee game. I was so stressed going into the game but so inspired by the way our team played and the way our fans showed up. It was an amazing display of showing up, teamwork and consistency. I could go on for paragraphs but I’ll summarize it with these words from ESPN

“Nothing Georgia did Saturday was remarkable in a micro sense, but to view the win from a macro level was utterly breathtaking. This is what championships are built upon — not fireworks and drama, but 11 guys doing the right thing at the same time, one play after another, again and again. This is what Georgia does better than anyone else can.”

It’s great to be a Georgia Bulldog. Go Dawgs. Glory, glory.

I did take a halftime break to walk the dogs with Virginia and that was great.

My night wrapped up with a hot bath with a candle, salts, a face mask and a book.

SUNDAY

I was in bed by 10p on Saturday so given the added hour of sleep, I was ready to go on Sunday!

Barry's Charlotte

I thought I would take a hot yoga class on Sunday morning before picking up Finn but somehow found myself taking class at Barry’s instead!? It was an awesome workout and felt like such a fun way to treat myself to something different. I have many things to say about this that it probably deserves its own post so stay tuned.

I picked Finn up at 10:30a and we came home and got lots of snuggles in. It was a rainy day so nice to veg on the couch.

paw patrol live

Sunday afternoon brought a fun outing to Paw Patrol Live!!! I was served a Facebook ad about this show a few weeks ago and immediately booked it. I didn’t tell Finn about it until I picked him up on Sunday. He was pumped!

paw patrol live

Finn loves popcorn and asked to get some for a snack. It was $15 but came with a Rubble hat so I acquiesced. We opened it when we got to our seats and he took one bite and didn’t like it. Rather than get frustrated, I offered it to the dad and two boys sitting next to us and their faces lit up and they gobbled the bag down. Random acts of kindness for the win.

Finn’s reaction to the show was everything. It was his first live show and I feel like we went at just the right age. He was super into it and able to sit still. He spent all day today telling everyone he saw Paw Patrol “in real life.”

Aldi avocados

We made a quick stop into ALDI on the way home. Never not amazed by their avocado prices and couldn’t resist sharing with y’all. Groceries are crazy expensive right now so I’ll take the deals where I can find them!

And that wraps up the weekend recap!

PSA: I have been watching episode one of the 2022 Holiday Baking Championship while writing this post. I look forward to this series every year! Easy and feel good TV.
