It’s not unusual for me to leave the house before 7 a.m. and not return again until after 7 p.m. My days tend to be long and spent bouncing between the gym and the yoga studio. When I leave the house in the morning it’s all I can do to have a bag packed with everything I’ll need for the day and breakfast supplies. I will admit that I have gotten in a bad habit lately of picking up coffee at Starbucks instead of making it at home and using a to-go mug. Another very (shamefully!) bad habit I’ve gotten into is not carrying a water bottle with me. Rather, I buy bottled water on the go and refill it here and there.
Photographic evidence…my yoga mat with a Starbucks cup and a water bottle. This is something that has been weighing on my conscious from both an environmental responsibility and budget standpoint. Let’s say that my morning cup of coffee is usually $2 and a bottle of water averages $1.50…if I bought three of each every week (and that’s a conservative estimate), that adds up to a whopping $550. And from an environmental angle, here are some facts about bottled water from the Clean Air Council.
- At least 90 percent of the price of a bottle of water is for things other than the water itself, like bottling, packaging, shipping and marketing.
- 44 percent of ‘purified’ bottled water sold in the U.S. started out as municipal water.
- 827,000 to 1.3 million tons of plastic PET water bottles were produced in the U.S. in 2006, requiring the energy equivalent of 50 million barrels of oil. 76.5 percent of these bottles ended up in landfills.
So, where am I going with this? Clearly, it’s time for a change in my routine. A couple of weeks ago I gave my coffee pot a thorough cleaning inside and out and recommitted to making coffee at home again in the mornings and I dug my reusable water bottles out of the cabinets.

One of the catalysts for this change in behavior was the receiving Whirlpool® Water’s EveryDrop™ Water Filter to test and review. When I thought about the budget and environmental impact of my bad habits along with reading that just one of the EveryDrop Water Filter can prevent 450 plastic water bottles from going to the landfill, it was a no brainer. It’s hard to ignore cold hard facts.
The EveryDrop Water Filter is a portable filtration system that can filter a gallon of water in just two minutes. It’s extremely easy to use. I am not “gadgety” and I had this thing out of the packaging and in use in no time. The instructions that come with the filter are simple to follow.
It truly is portable. As you can see in the photo above, the product fits in my hand. It also comes with a convenient travel case so that you can throw it in your gym bag, suitcase, car, desk, etc. You can also use it at home for things such as filling pitchers for the fridge and filtering water into your coffee maker. It comes with a filter that lasts for two months and an indicator for you to track what month you loaded the filter in so you can remember to change it.
The water that I filter from my EveryDrop Water Filter system tastes great and also provides me with peace of mind that I’m not only saving money but also taking steps to reduce my eco-footprint.
