Being of Service

Today is a day of honor. Today is a day of remembrance. Today is a day of gratitude. For the incredible sacrifice made by those men and women who served our country. Whether they’re strangers, brothers, friends, mothers, spouses or grandfathers, each act of service was equally as important and honorable.

I am really blessed to have several vets who attend my yoga classes and when I watch them practice and when I think about their years of service and all they’ve endured through deployments, assignments, missions and stations, it sends chills down my spine.

My reading in my yoga classes this weekend was about being of service. We can only hope to serve others, our communities and the universe at large in a capacity that is anywhere remotely close to what our vets have done.

Here is the reading I shared with my classes. It’s from The Daily Motivator.

Can you be of service? Of course you can.

Being of service is at the heart of what life is all about. Much of life’s richest essence revolves around being of service to others, to yourself, and to the world around you.

The opportunity to be of service is an opportunity that brings out your most valuable and meaningful skills. It gives you the chance to get better and better at authentically being you.

Being of service feels profoundly right. That’s because it is.

Your actions can make life more valuable, meaningful and joyful for everyone with whom you come in contact. And that most certainly includes you.

Use your moments, your resources, your skills and your passions to genuinely be of service. Be of service, and you’ll be living life at its highest and most fulfilling level.

We talked about recognizing the gifts that are inherent within us and how we should not be stingy with our gifts but look for ways to use them in service to each other and the world. It kind of goes back to the basis of that JFK quote, “Ask not what your country can do for you but ask what you can do for your country.” When we act from a place of service our  actions are so much more authentic and heartfelt. This in turn creates more of that in your life because like attracts like…when you treat others from a place of service, it will come back to you as well.

We also talked about just being a good person and being as kind as possible to everyone you come across and sharing your light whenever possible.

Happy Memorial Day and a big thank you to everyone who has serviced our country.

Breakfast + What I Bought at Trader Joe’s

Breakfast + What I Bought at Trader Joe’s

I am such a creature of habit when it comes to breakfast. 95% of the time I’m craving a breakfast that is on the sweet side. That mostly alternates between smoothies or yogurt bowls with overnight oats, chia pudding or oatmeal occasionally thrown in there. On the rare occasion I go savory – it’s scrambled [...]

Life Lately: Summer So Far

Life Lately: Summer So Far

I want to bottle up this summer and make it last forever (well, maybe minus the wildly hot and humid weather that makes running a big thumbs down). I mentioned this in my last post…but I am really enjoying the slower pace and the days that feel like they have more space. While I’m trying [...]

So Many Dinner Ideas

Happy Friday! I hope this post finds you well and enjoying the summer. We are in the dog days of it over here in Charlotte – the heat and humidity is off the charts – but it’s something I’ll embrace because I deeply appreciate the massive slow down that summer has brought. A lot of [...]

Life Lately: 8 Years Old, A New Piercing, Trail Training and More

Happy Memorial Day Weekend. It’s a very rainy one here in Charlotte and while I am a little bummed not to be spending the weekend in Florida with the fam or by the pool at our swim club (just opened for the season!), I’m also welcoming a slower pace and time at home. It’s been [...]
