The Worst Day to Run + A Visitor + Beach Eats

Hey there!

I got back to Charlotte at 5:45 last night…just in time to teach my 6 p.m. hot class. It was so good to see my yogis but I always appreciate a few days off from teaching every couple of months. When you teach 10+ classes a week sometimes it can seem like you’re doing and saying the same thing over and over again. After a few days break I was ready to jump back into it!

I was able to stay at the beach until about 2 p.m. yesterday. Sunset is such an easy drive from Charlotte…just a little over 3 hours. Once the weather cools down a bit and off-season rates start, I want to take a long weekend trip with Tanner and the girls. I said it last year but I am determined to make it happen this year!

It was brutally hot at the beach this year. I think the low in the evenings was only around 80 degrees so mornings were humid and steamy. I ran yesterday morning and it was the worst day to run…trash pick up day! The heat and humidity combined with trash cans lining the street made for one smelly run. I tried to run in the middle of the road whenever I could to avoid the smell. And half of my run was on the beach so I can’t complain about that. Sunset has the best beaches for running, wide and flat. I can never run on the beach when I’m home visiting my family because the sand is too soft and sloped.

I got home to find this sweet face. Meet Bear Bundon. He’s staying with us for two weeks. He belongs to one of our teachers and we eagerly volunteered to dog sit when she told us her family would be out of the country this summer. He’s three years old and extremely chill.

He’s fitting right in with our two girls. This was the scene last night. All three of them were chewing on bones. (<– these bones are the best!) So happy to welcome Bear into our home for a couple of weeks although I may have to bump my daily vacuuming up to two-a-days! 🙂

A few beach eats to share and then I’ve got to run off to teach yoga.

Nectarine, blueberries, scrambled eggs and Zucchini Carrot Banana Bread with almond butter. Two things…1) I ate scrambled eggs for breakfast every morning while I was gone. 2) I got quite a few requests on Instagram to share the bread recipe so I will do that next week after I test it one more time. I’m kinda crazy about making sure that recipes will turn out perfectly for you guys and the texture could have been improved a little here.

Lunches were a rotation between salads and sandwiches…both with chips on the side! Chips are one of those foods that you just have to eat at the beach.

I topped my salads with turkey and used whatever veggies we had on hand.

I made a sandwich for the drive home yesterday. It’s been forever since I had a sandwich like this with soft wheat bread, deli meat, tomato and lettuce and it totally hit the spot.

I also made the mistake of traveling with an entire bag of ALDI sweet potato chips. (Side note: I still use an old school GPS on road trips sometimes because the iPhone map app drains my battery faster than anything else!)

Our dinners were awesome.

I didn’t get in until about 8 p.m. on Saturday night and Dorie had dinner ready to go. She grilled teriyaki chicken breasts and we had roasted veggies and rice pilaf on the side. The chicken was so tender and flavorful. I went back for a second piece.

Fish taco and Mexican quinoa night. I think this was the crowd favorite dinner. You can never go wrong with tacos.

You’ve already seen this one but it was so good I have to post it again! Grilled plantains, peanut butter sauce grilled shrimp skewers, coconut rice with fresh mango and steamed asparagus with lime crema.

On my last night there we grilled burgers and roasted potatoes and peppers. We buttered and grilled the buns and I swear it makes the biggest difference in the deliciousness of burgers.

We didn’t have much in the fridge when I got home from teaching last night so I thew everything we did have onto a roasting pan and made a one-pan roasted dinner with brussels, potatoes, sweet potatoes, parsnips, carrots, onions and chicken apple sausage. We ate it while watching Parenthood. I’ve heard so much about it over the years and we were looking for something new to watch so we’re trying it out.

Time to teach! Y’all have a great day! 🙂

Anyone else think trash day is the worst day to run? Or do you have a different “worst day?”

Burgers or tacos? Which would be your top pick?

EVERYTHING on that grilled plantains plate looks and sounds so, so good! When I saw your blog title I was not expecting garbage day! Haha… that is brutal!

    • Jen DeCurtins July 28, 2016, 4:52 pm

Haha! What day did you expect!?

  • Maria July 28, 2016, 11:49 am

The school I teach at has a great track with a couple of neighbor cows on the other side of the fence. They love to watch us outside but running on a hot day? Whew! One lap is about all I can take!

    • Jen DeCurtins July 28, 2016, 4:52 pm

Oh man! That might be worse than the trash!

  • Fran July 28, 2016, 12:07 pm

I’ve had the garbage day blues myself – stuck behind the truck in the morning when I’m walking my dogs and it seems whatever block I turn down, here they come! Love Google Maps, hate the phone drain so I either keep my car charger plugged in or shut the screen off (that’s what causes the battery drain). When the screen is off the next turn will still pop up to let you know where to go! Those bones look great but keep in mind they splinter at some point as they weaken, especially with hefty chewers. Have a wonderful time pupsitting!

      Oh that’s the worst!

Thanks for the tip on the Google Maps app. I’ll try the screen shut off.

Love love love Parenthood! Never watched a single episode without crying. Lauren Graham and Dax Shepard are fantastic!

    • Jen DeCurtins July 28, 2016, 4:50 pm

So excited to get into it! 🙂 I love a good cry! 🙂

  • ACKTIVE LIFE July 28, 2016, 12:17 pm

That is a tough pick…I love both burgers and tacos SO MUCH!!! Love all of your eats as always…and a bag of chips on a long drive is guaranteed to be devoured. It’s hard to stop once you start…XOXO

    • Jen DeCurtins July 28, 2016, 4:50 pm

Yes, and then I made the mistake of leaving them in the car and got into them again today! 🙂 Are you on SnapChat?

  • Julie Running in a Skirt July 28, 2016, 1:18 pm

I run at a nearby park and they mow on Tuesdays. I’m allergic to grass so that’s the worst day to run in my world! haha!
I’ve been thinking about starting Parenthood too. I’ve heard great things about it.

    • Jen DeCurtins July 28, 2016, 4:49 pm

Oh yes, that would be bad if you were allergic to grass. Everyone that’s commented on Parenthood seems to say it’s great so give it a go!

  • Erin July 28, 2016, 1:25 pm

Running on trash in IN THE SUMMER. I feel like it’s not nearly as bad in the cold. And getting stuck behind the truck, AHHHHH! Sunset does have the best beach for running though 🙂

Parenthood is the BEST!! We binged last year and I still miss all of them.

    • Jen DeCurtins July 28, 2016, 4:48 pm

It really isn’t. Something about the heat just makes that smell 100x worse!

  • Julie July 28, 2016, 1:59 pm

YES to buttering & grilling the buns! Makes such a big difference!

  • Cameron July 28, 2016, 2:33 pm

Parenthood is the BEST!!! Every season gets better and better so stick with it … And get some tissues from Costco.

    • Jen DeCurtins July 28, 2016, 4:48 pm

Awesome. Can’t wait to get sucked in…and to cry! 😛

  • Meah July 28, 2016, 3:00 pm

Yikes! I’ve never run on trash day, but I can just imagine how awful the smell would be mixed with the heat. I guess the only other “worst days to run” would be when it’s really cold, but just barely at freezing so the rain comes down like icy slush or like this week when I did a super shot run and the “real feel” temperature was 109. Man, hamburgers or taco, that’s a toughy! Hmm…now I’m wondering how the two would taste combined…

    • Jen DeCurtins July 28, 2016, 4:47 pm

yes…cold weather runs are brutal. especially wet ones!!! i was contemplating a quick run today but our temps are 96 right now so i don’t know about that!

  • Mikella July 28, 2016, 3:33 pm

Parenthood! Ugh! You are going to feel all of your feelings at once. There were definitely parts where I was laughing and crying at the same time…. and I’m a dog mom like you! I can’t imagine how intense that show would be to a mom of human children. 😉

    • Jen DeCurtins July 28, 2016, 4:46 pm

oh man! i better get emotionally ready for this. and haha on the fur child comment! 🙂

  • Rebecca July 29, 2016, 10:45 am

Get a robot vacuum! Ours helps with the pet hair so much.

Tacos for sure! Potato, egg and cheese tacos are the best thing ever after a long run.

worst day to run for me was last saturday in atlanta – i was there for work staying at the marriott marquis, and i thought i would go down to olympic park… and the herbalife people were EVERYWHERE (and have NO sidewalk manners) so i couldnt even run a good part of the walk there – and when i got there, they had closed a majority of the park so they could have a private concert! so i ran around the perimeter for a bit and then went back to the dreadmill!

  • Laura August 3, 2016, 11:03 am

I have definitely run on trash day one or one million times, and it’s just not pretty. Definitely helps with speed though!!

On the Aldi sweet potato chips — those things are SO addicting. I can easily polish off a bag in three days by myself!!! If I’m having them with a glass of wine, that bag may actually be one serving!
