The Weekend I Needed

Hello, hello. I am logging on for a quick weekend recap. It was nothing special but exactly what I needed it to be.

Carolina waterfowl rescueThe first update I owe you is on the baby birds. One of my blog readers referred me to Carolina Waterfowl Rescue and I was so grateful discover this amazing resource in the Charlotte area. They offer incredible support around what to do with baby birds. They have a super helpful graphic on their site and also offer text support. I texted photos and videos of the two baby birds and it was quickly determined that they weren’t being fed and needed to come in.

I packed up what I would later learn were baby cardinals in my car and brought them to the rescue. I was told they would be incubated and fed every 15 minutes during the day by volunteers. When they grow strong and big enough to be released, Carolina Waterfowl Rescue does a soft release where the birds have access to fly free but can come back to eat and sleep. They told me most of them stop coming back after a few days.

Finn was very happy to hear they had been rescued. I hope they make it. <3

Update: I just heard from a volunteer who follows me on Instagram that she fed them several times during her shift this weekend and they are happy and healthy! Yay!

Unfortunately, my mom didn’t feel up for doing much during her remaining days in Charlotte after clinic but she did venture out to the Charlotte Regional Farmers Market with us on Saturday morning.

late summer farmers market

I was determined to make it there this weekend after being out of town for the last few weeks. I had to catch the last of the NC tomatoes and get some okra. I was disappointed that I couldn’t find any figs that weren’t worth buying. This might be my first fig-free summer in many years.

Finn and I took a late afternoon trip to the pool on Saturday. The pool is only open for a few more weekends so we’re trying to take advantage of it. He basically jumped off the diving board for almost two hours straight. I had one tired kiddo that evening.

Sunday morning looked like taking my mom to the airport and a quick Walmart run on the way home. I was putting some Charmin in my cart and turned around to find Finn on top of a display of toilet paper telling me it was “so cozy.”

Back at home we did all the things. It started with watching YouTube videos about how to fix some wonky blinds due to dogs/kids. I learned how to take them down, open them up and kinda fix them. Finn brought all of his tools to help. They definitely look better so I was proud of us.

I also organized all of the bathrooms and filled up a whole trash bag of things that needed to be cleared out.

making slime

Finn was patient through all of my fixing and organizing but kept asking if we could make slime so we did that once I got to a good stopping point.

running with little kids

A little after 5p, I told Finn that it was time to take a walk. We went to get the stroller out of the shed and he pointed to the running stroller and said, “No mommy, run!” While I was definitely in more of a walking mindset in the moment…I had also wanted to get a workout in on Sunday but had accepted that it wasn’t going to happen. I took it as a sign to buckle up and get it done!

I told myself we’d do a 5K and be done. To be honest, the first mile of this run was really hard and I wanted to be done but around mile two, I got into a groove. We stopped at that point so Finn could visit the kid’s library in our neighborhood. I started running back towards our house but kept taking extra loops. At mile four I asked Finn if he wanted to head home or keep going and he answered, “keep going.”

stroller runningWe ended up at 5.5 miles and I felt so grateful that we got this run done. I don’t think I realized how much I needed it until I did it.

I jumped right into the shower after my run and then put argon oil in my hair before wet braiding it and a vitamin-c mask on my face before coming downstairs to make dinner.

Finn went down so easy tonight and in the best and easiest mood. I made a tomato pie which is one of my favorite nostalgic summer foods. I’m watching Indian Matchmaking as I write this post. I’ve enjoyed both seasons of it.

This is the end. I hope you guys had a great weekend.

QUESTIONS

What summer produce are you most sad to say goodbye to?

What age did you stop stroller running with your kids?

Did you do any organizing or fix-it projects around the house this weekend?
