Let’s Catch Up + Last Week’s Workouts

How are we feeling about the Super Bowl last night? I have to tell you that the only part of it I watched was Rihanna’s halftime performance but I thought she crushed it. I liked the mix hit songs – and that she kept the performance relatively understated in comparison to other performers in recent years. Also, what a way to make a pregnancy announcement.

What an inspirational woman – Rihanna has sold 250 million records, won nine Grammys and just became a billionaire through building a beauty empire with her cosmetics line, Fenty Beauty. Holy moly.

SUPER BOWL SUNDAY + WHAT I’VE BEEN WATCHING

I enjoy watching football but I prefer college. I don’t watch a lot of NFL football and had zero care one way or the other which of these teams won. I might have watched the game but it was right in the middle of feeding Finn dinner and getting him ready for bed so instead I just rewound to the halftime show once he was asleep and then called it a night!

Finn was so funny though. I told him there was a big football game on last night and he said, “I know – the Chiefs! Who do you want to win mommy?” Apparently his nanny had filled him in on the Super Bowl. When I shared this morning that the Chiefs had won he started excitedly cheering/yelling “YES!” and said, “say yay mommy!”

the morning show

One thing that I have been watching lately is The Morning Show. I don’t know how I missed the boat on this show when it first came out but I have made my way through the first season in the last two weeks and just started on the second. 100% obsessed with Billy Crudup in this show.

A LITTLE ZOEY UPDATE

golden retriever kennel cough

Zoey had a bit of a rough week last week. On Wednesday evening she started coughing and gagging. It went on with a pretty regular frequency through the night and into the next day. She was eating, drinking and otherwise acting pretty happy to I gave it some time to see if it would pass but decided to take her into the vet Thursday afternoon. She was still coughing and starting to act a little mopey.

Finn was an excellent helper. He adores Zoey and calls her, “his gurl” (typing it how he says it, haha). He helped me hold her leash and walk her in and kept reassuring her by patting her and telling her it was okay.

Our vet is treating her cough as a respiratory infection because it’s presenting like kennel cough. Zoey is vaccinated and we don’t go to boarding facilities, day cares or dog parks but he said she could have picked it up around the neighborhood because it’s so highly contagious. She’s on a two-week course of antibiotics and we’ll see how she does from there.

It’s been about five days since the onset of symptoms and her cough has lessened in intensity and frequency every day. I think we are on the right track and hopefully it’s not something more serious (tumor on lungs, heart failure, etc). Benji has not developed symptoms. I’ve never had a dog with kennel cough before so this is new territory.

Of course Zoey acted as happy as could be once I got her to the vet and hardly coughed at all. Luckily, I had made a video and that was helpful for the doctor to see. Just a tip in case you’re in a similar scenario in the future.

I’ll keep y’all updated. FYI – we switched our veterinary care to Independence Veterinary Clinic last year and I’m still very happy with that decision.

LAST WEEK’S WORKOUTS

apple watch running

Sunday: REST

Monday: 5 mile run

Tuesday: hot power yoga + 2.5 mile walk

Wednesday: 45-minute full body lift and I can’t even remember what I did because I was hustling to get it in before preschool pick up…but I know I pushed the sled a bunch and did pull ups, single leg deadlifts, push ups, some cable machine work, etc.

Thursday: Barry’s (50-minute class – half was treadmill speed intervals and half was “abs and ass” with band work galore)

Friday: 4 mile walk

Saturday: 15-minute treadmill run + 45-minute full body lift with a focus on sled pulls, pull ups and barbell squats, deadlifts and overhead presses

Sunday: Barry’s (50-minute class – half was treadmill speed intervals and half was full body strength…the strength work was so good in this class!). I hosted a group sweat date and had some friends from Instagram join me. It was fun!

Today will be an afternoon walk with Finn and the pups. (Vet said to continue to exercise Zoey and that it will help her recovery.)

Barry's Charlotte

Thoughts on this week of workouts…

Solid. Really happy with the mix of strength and running. Wish I could have gotten one more yoga practice in but I did to some light stretching on multiple days.

I feel like I’m in a great place with strength AND running right now. I’ve been really consistent with lifting the last few months and I’m seeing noticeable strength gains. I’m going up on weights in most of my lifts and just this past Saturday I did 23 unassisted pull-ups throughout the course of my workout!

RE: running. I’m not running a ton right now (maybe 1-2x week) but my paces have been a little faster and effort has felt easier. I fully attribute that to adding speed work in at Barry’s.

Good stuff!

Alrighty friends. I am off to teach some yoga. I hope you have a beautiful start to the week!

QUESTIONS

Did you watch the Super Bowl? Who were you pulling for? What snacks did you eat? Did you like the halftime show?

Have you ever dealt with kennel cough?

How are your workouts feeling right now? What are you in the best groove with? What needs more attention?

Life Lately: Summer So Far

Life Lately: Summer So Far

I want to bottle up this summer and make it last forever (well, maybe minus the wildly hot and humid weather that makes running a big thumbs down). I mentioned this in my last post…but I am really enjoying the slower pace and the days that feel like they have more space. While I’m trying [...]

Life Lately: 8 Years Old, A New Piercing, Trail Training and More

Happy Memorial Day Weekend. It’s a very rainy one here in Charlotte and while I am a little bummed not to be spending the weekend in Florida with the fam or by the pool at our swim club (just opened for the season!), I’m also welcoming a slower pace and time at home. It’s been [...]
