Bonus Weekend + Last Week’s Workouts

I’m winding down a bonus weekend with Finn due to  some last-minute schedule changes. I’m always happy for extra time with my boy so it was a great weekend. 🙂

FRIDAY

novena health symphony park pediatrics

Our day started with a precautionary pediatrician visit for a small injury that Finn had on his face. I messaged with the nurse and she recommended that I bring him in. Thankfully, we got an all-clear and were just sent home with some prescription-strength antibiotic ointment. I love that they do themed rooms at his pediatrician’s office and this Star Wars room kept him entertained the whole time we were waiting for the doctor to come in.

We swung by Home Depot and Verdant Bread on the way home and then had lunch. I mentioned to Finn that I wanted to do a stroller run at some point that day and was a little shocked when he asked me if I was ready to go go run around 1:15p. I jumped on his willingness and quickly got changed.

stroller run

I was grateful for every single one of these five miles and Finn’s sweet cheerleading through them but OMG…stroller runs are no joke with a 38-pound small child.

Two things. First, I would not still be doing stroller runs if it weren’t for my Cybex AVA Jogging Stroller. I still use (and choose) the BOB for walks but the Cybex AVA is a million times better and easier for running. I still owe you guys a review of this stroller and I will get to it in the next few weeks. Second, I relax all expectations about my run performance when I am pushing a stroller. I am really good on the flats and gradual downhills but any kind of incline is brutal at this point. I walk up all of the steep hills and I think I stopped every half mile throughout this run to catch my breath and take a sip of water. At one point Finn asked me, “mommy, are you tired?” I replied, “A little.” And he said, “you can do it mommy.”

Post run smoothies for both of us!

freedom park Charlotte

Once I got showered and dressed, I let Finn choose what park he wanted to go to. He chose Freedom Park and we spent a little over two hours playing. Finn has always naturally gravitated towards older kids and it always makes my heart happy when they are kind to him. These kids took him right in and the kid you see bending over and talking to Finn reassured me that Finn was okay to play with them and that he was “training Finn.”

Whole Foods frozen pizza

We ended our Friday with a pizza party. I popped a frozen pizza from Whole Foods in the oven. I had a chopped salad with my pepperoni half.

SATURDAY

metro fitness club Charlotte nc

Our nanny was scheduled to have the day off on Friday but offered to take Finn for a few hours on Saturday morning. He enjoyed an outing to the Whitewater Center while I wrote a recipe blog post (going live this week!) and got in a workout at the gym. She is a rockstar.

I don’t have any other photos from Saturday so I’ll share a couple that she sent me from Finn’s morning outing. This is Finn with our nanny’s nephew who is Finn’s BFF. She said they were holding hands without any interference or encouragement.

Our Saturday afternoon and evening looked like laundry, household chores, another short playdate with a friend that stopped by and a Target run.

SUNDAY

smoothie and coffee

We slept until about 7:30a and made our way downstairs at 8 for breakfast. Finn had a bagel and I had a smoothie and coffee with Bulletproof collagen. My smoothie was a mix of frozen bananas, strawberries, mango, raspberries and cauliflower rice with plain greek yogurt, a medjool date, almond butter, coconut water and a splash of oat milk.

We headed to a park near our house midday for a birthday party for a girl in Finn’s class at preschool. It was really lovely to get to see Finn interact with his classmates and to get to chat with some of the other parents. I typically only drop him off in carpool. His nanny does all of his pickups. I was so proud of how kind and patient he was. We enjoyed the playground, pizza and cake!

best soft chocolate chip cookies

Back at home, we baked big, soft, gooey chocolate chip cookies using this recipe. The only change I make is to refrigerate the dough for an hour or so before baking.

cockapoo

Virginia came over at 4 for a walk. We were a site to see traversing the neighborhood with three dogs, a stroller and an active three-year-old (I let him go back and forth between riding and walking). Finn was SO excited to see Virginia’s cockapoo, Stella. As soon as they left, he told me that he wished he could see Stella again and a few minutes later that he missed her.

We stayed outside for another hour or so playing in the front yard. Finn was in a great mood and the weather was beautiful so I was all for it.

It was a great weekend. <3

LAST WEEK’S WORKOUTS

I want to take a minute to recap last week’s workouts because I’ve had some requests to bring this back. While I don’t plan to do so on a weekly basis, this felt like a good one to share. It was my ideal mix of run/lift/yoga and my body felt great. The only thing I wish I could have fit in more of was walking the dogs. Ideally, I’d like to get them out every day for at least 30 minutes.

Sunday:
5 mile run around Duke campus

Monday:
50-minute total body strength training at the gym (lots of sleds and back squats)

Tuesday:
60-minute hot power yoga class (AM), 2.75 mile walk with dogs (PM)

Wednesday:
25-minute treadmill run with tempo/speed intervals for the last 10 minutes + 30-minute total body lift (mostly dumbbells and some unilateral work – here’s a workout I posted to Instagram with a lot of the movements I did)

Thursday:
50-minute hot power yoga class

Friday:
5 mile stroller run

Saturday:
50-minute total body strength training at the gym (same focus as Monday)

Sunday:
3 mile walk
