Hit the Brixx 10K Recap + My Weekend

Happy Monday! I woke up early so I’m getting a little bit of work done and knocking out my weekend recap before Finn is up for the day.

FRIDAY

I had Finn with me on Friday morning before he left to spent the weekend with his dad. We hung out at home, watched some shows and snuggled and played with toys. Finn has become very adept at scaling the kitchen counters and this was his face when I told him we weren’t having Reese’s Eggs for morning snack.

10 minutes before it was time for him to go, Finn decided to dump out his entire toy basket. This gave me an excuse to do some overdue toy organization, which I tackled after he left. Cute story: when he got home on Sunday and walked into the den/playroom he said, “You organized my toys! Thanks mom!”

I spent the rest of Friday afternoon working before heading over to Charlotte Yoga to take and teach. I took the 4:30p hot flow class and taught the 5:45p candlelight class.

Whole Foods shelf restock

I swung by Whole Foods on the way home to get a few things and every aisle looked like this! Apparently, Friday nights are shelf restocking nights.

salmon sheet pan dinner

I assembled a quick sheet pan dinner of broccoli, carrots and salmon. I roasted it and served it all over couscous.

hot tea and ice cream

And then it was off to bed early with hot tea and ice cream. I had a big Saturday morning planned!

I was so excited to go to bed early and get good sleep. I was awoken at 11:20 to a sound downstairs. It was Benji….going through the trash. I had forgotten to lock it before I headed upstairs for the night. That was fun to clean up. 😛

SATURDAY: HIT THE BRIXX 10K

hit the brixx 10K Charlotte

Saturday morning found me at the starting line of the Hit the Brixx 10K! I registered on a whim Friday afternoon. A relaxed 10K race sounded like the perfect start to my Saturday. I picked up my bib when I arrived and headed over to the start. We were off at 8:20!

hit the brixx 10K course

I’ve run this race a few times before but when it used to be in uptown Charlotte. It’s now in south Charlotte and while the course is much more suburban, it’s a great race. Super well-organized, ample parking and a mostly flat or downhill course.

I run 3-5 miles, 2-3 times per week right now so the 6.2 mile race distance didn’t feel like a stretch for me. I went into the race with the intention to have fun and not focus on pace AT ALL. I cued up the playlist I had made the night before and found a great groove! I paced between an 8:40 and 9:00 mile for all six miles and only walked once through a water stop because I wanted to get two cups of water.

jen eddins peanut butter runner

I crossed the finish line feeling really, really good but VERY sweaty! It was 80 degrees and 80 percent humidity for the race. A wake-up call for all the humid summer runs to come!

hit the brixx race recap

My official chip time was 54:28. Just a tad faster than my last 10k back in September when I was pushing Finn in the jogging stroller on a hilly course. While I missed my co-pilot on Saturday, I was pretty grateful not to be pushing a stroller. He was pretty bummed to hear that I ran a race without him and asked if we can do one soon. I think I’ll find a fun 5k, haha.

race water station

One thing I thought was amazing about the race this year was that they replaced finish medals with race-themed metal cups and eliminated plastic water bottles. Would love to see more of this at races.

Another thing people love about this race is that there is Brixx pizza and beer after the race. I didn’t partake in either at 9:30 in the morning but yum!

greenapple sports Charlotte

I found my good friend Dr. Bradberry from Greenapple Sports after the race. They were there treating runners. I thanked him profusely for everything they do for me to allow me to run and feel as good as I do, especially given my chronic hip injury. I had ZERO hip pain during or after the race.

running outfit

Last thing about the race and I’ll move on to the rest of the weekend…I LOVED my race day outfit. I felt so comfortable. Here are the details:

pool day

I’d like to say that I was productive the rest of the day but I was absolutely not. I spent some time at the pool, laid in bed for two hours and took a 30 minute nap while I was at it, sat out on my patio, etc. I did make it over to SouthPark Mall to exchange some things at Dick’s Sporting Goods and swap out some Align leggings at lululemon. I had a pair that I bought last fall and the seams were unraveling. They replaced them, no questions asked. They are so good about this with their products!

aroy thai charlotte

My Saturday evening concluded with Thai delivery and a movie on the couch. My Thai order was green curry with tofu and extra veggies from Aroy. My movie selection was The Worst Person in the World. I didn’t realize that the movie was subtitled but that ended up being a great thing for me as I was forced to pay close attention. 🙂

SUNDAY

I had a low-key Sunday morning and took the dogs for a walk before I picked up Finn. I brought him home and we ate lunch and then got ready for his first pool day of the season!

Finn had a blast at the pool Sunday afternoon! It’s going to be a fun summer of swimming!

My little fish even stayed in the pool playing for 30 minutes throughout a torrential rain shower. I’m glad we waited it out because there was tons of sunshine on the other side of it.

cheeseburgers and tater tots

Cheeseburgers and tater tots were a perfect end to the weekend. I was in bed by 9p and it was wonderful.

Finn is up, eating a bagel and watching Blues Clues so I’m wrapping this up to get us both ready for our days. I hope you all have a great week!

QUESTIONS

What’s the last race that you ran? Favorite race distance?

Do you like running races for “fun” without worrying about pace?

Any current favorite running gear to share? Shorts or tanks you’d recommend?
