Labor Day Weekend in Georgia

I had a really special Labor Day Weekend. Sullie and I drove down to Georgia to spend a few days with my grandmother. I told my grandmother I was going to surprise her with which golden I was going to bring. She guessed Sullie and guessed right! Sullie’s relaxed pace is just right for Mema’s house. 🙂

9.8memasullie

Sullie enjoyed a weekend of being an only pup and got spoiled like only grandmothers know how to spoil. This is my grandmother sharing her cereal milk with Sullie. Haha. Don’t worry, Zoey was pretty much in heaven in Charlotte being the center of her dad’s world and I got reports that they went on a four mile walk and Zoey got to sleep in the bed.

9.8chickenbroc

We arrived on Saturday evening and I whipped up a quick dinner of a rotisserie chicken I picked up from Whole Foods, parmesan couscous and steamed broccoli with a little butter and cheese. (Because everything is better with a little butter and cheese!)

9.8cake

I ate a piece of hummingbird cake with a cup of tea while we sat on the couch and chatted for a while after dinner.

greekyogurtchia

I slept for TEN hours on Saturday night and woke up around 9 on Sunday. I picked up this coconut chia greek yogurt at Whole Foods and used it for a granola parfait.

9.8granola

All the good things in here…yogurt, bananas, flax cranberry almond granola and peanut butter.

9.8postrun

After breakfast and porch sitting (we do a lot of that!), I took off for a run. I covered 5 miles in 45 minutes. I arrived back a sweaty mess and found my aunt and cousin had stopped by for a visit.

My cousin just got married in Maine and she had 350 printed pictures to show us. They were GORGEOUS!

Maine isn’t the first place to come to mind when you think destination wedding but the scenery was stunning. She said it was 78 degrees and sunny at 6 p.m. when they got married out on these rocks. Her husband has family from Maine so that’s how they got the idea to get married there. So unique and beautiful.

The wedding was super small with just their families so it was really nice for me and my grandmother to get to experience it through photos and her stories.

9.8lunch2

We had chicken salad for lunch while we all caught up. I made a salad to go along with.

9.8sulliecookie

And a homemade chocolate chip cookie for dessert. Sullie had her eye on the prize but her cuteness did not win me over.

9.8flowers

After my family left I ran to the store to grab some things for dinner and came back with some flowers to brighten up my grandmother’s house.

9.8sullietoy

And a new toy for Sullie. She was in heaven having something not ripped up by her sister that still squeaks. It stayed with her for the rest of our visit!

9.8tomatopiedinner

I stopped by the farmers market the morning I left Charlotte to pick up a bunch of things for my grandmother. I made a dinner featuring some of the things from the market on Sunday night. We had tomato pie (recipe soon), roasted okra and squash casserole. So yummy!

Later that evening we watched I’ll See You in My Dreams and then I went to bed and finally finished Where’d You Go Bernadette.

9.8hill

Monday morning was a repeat of Sunday morning with breakfast and porch sitting. When I finally decided to move my body, I thought it was a good idea to go to the park a few blocks away and run hill sprints. Good lord. I nearly died!

9.8memaflowers

I spent a few more hours with my grandmother chatting and doing things around the house before making lunch and packing up.

9.8chickensalad

Lunch was a repeat of Sunday but with some pineapple added.

Sullie and I left around 4 p.m. and arrived back in Charlotte around 8 just as it was getting dark. I stopped to take this photo in the middle of a big orchard in Georgia. I love the hour-long drive from my grandmother’s house to the Interstate. Everything seems to go at a slower pace and I always find myself reflecting on how lucky and grateful I am for my relationship with my grandmother.

Counting the days until our next visit.

What did you do for Labor Day Weekend? Did you travel?

Have you ever had tomato pie?
